Our Californians are out of Al's Cals and Buttonwood lines.

Development of the Breed:

The Californian breed was developed by a furrier whom wanted to maximize his profits with a breed that would be ideal for both meat and fur. The Californian was developed to have a high meat to bone ratio with white, flyback fur worthy of sale. The three breeds that were mixed to produce the Californian were the Himilayan, White New Zealand, and the Giant Chinchilla. The Californian's color and fine bone were inherited from the Himilayan. Their meat mass and type came from the New Zealand. The Chinchilla was used to obtain the density and texture of the Californian's fur.

1 Day Old Kits

Californian kits are born all pink. Their fur starts to grow in at about 3-4 days. At that time they are all white. Their points develop as they become older. If a young kit gets cold before its fur starts growing in, they become frosted. A frosted kit becomes silver-gray over its body, but their fur returns to its proper white color when they go through their first molt.

  How Californian's are Shown

Classes:

Californians are a 6 Class rabbit. This means that they are shown under six different weight classes at ARBA sanctioned shows. There is a senior class that rabbits over 8 months of age are shown in. The 6 to 8 months old class, simply called the 6/8 class, are between 6 and 8 months of age. The junior class consists of rabbits under 6 months old. There are a few exceptions to these rules, though. If a younger rabbit is overweight for its class, they can be entered in an older class. But, an older rabbit that doesn't make its weight requirement is not allowed to be shown in a younger class.

Weights:

  • Californian Senior Bucks weigh 8 to 10 pounds
  • Californian Senior Does weigh 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 pounds
  • 6 to 8 month old Californian Does weigh 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 pounds
  • 6 to 8 month old Californian Bucks weigh 8 to 9 pounds
  • Junior Cal Does weigh between 5 1/5 and 8 1/2 pounds
  • Junior Cal Bucks weigh between 5 1/5 and 8 pounds

A BIG Thank You!

I would like to thank Charles Brown of Buttonwood Rabbitry for helping a little girl with one Cal doe get started so many years ago! Charles gave my line it's jump start to becoming a show quality strain.

I would also like to thank Al Roland of Al's Cals for helping me better and further my Californian line. Visit Al's site to view some of the rabbits that our lines come from.

Al's Cals

2 Week Old Kit

This kit's eyes opened recently. You can see the color starting to develop on his nose. Notice how his body is gray. This kit is frosted, but it will not affect him once he gets older.

6 Week Old Kit

At 6 weeks old, the kits ears are starting to turn black starting at the base and going upward. Her nose is beginning to turn black from the center outward and her feet are beginning to turn black, also. This kit weighs 2 pounds.
